Burkina Faso and Niger strengthen energy cooperation in Sahel Alliance

President of Burkina Faso Captain Ibrahim Traoré received a high-level Nigerien delegation led by Energy Minister Professor Haoua Amadou in discussions aimed at boosting regional energy collaboration within the Sahel States Alliance (AES).
The talks centered on Niger’s Salkadamna coal complex, a strategic energy project designed to enhance energy autonomy for AES members Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger by leveraging local coal resources.
“We had the honor of discussing this transformative project with President Traoré,” stated Minister Amadou, emphasizing its regional significance.
The initiative aligns with the AES’s broader goals of deepening cooperation in energy, security, and infrastructure.

Niger formally invited Burkina Faso to join the project, framing it as a collective effort. “This isn’t just for one nation but for the entire Sahel,” Amadou added, highlighting General Abdourahamane Tiani’s vision for shared energy sovereignty.
President Traoré welcomed the proposal, pledging careful consideration. If adopted, Salkadamna could mark a pivotal step toward regional energy independence, addressing critical Sahelian challenges.
