Togo/United States: Strengthened economic cooperation in support of sustainable development

On July 21, 2025, the U.S. Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires in Togo, Richard Michaels, paid an official visit to the Lomé port platform, demonstrating the United States’ commitment to strengthening its economic cooperation with Togo. This initiative is part of a clear strategy to capitalize on the major logistical advantages of the Port of Lomé—Africa’s fourth busiest container port—to boost bilateral trade and create new opportunities for both American and Togolese businesses.

Under the leadership of President Faure Gnassingbé, Togo has successfully transformed this port infrastructure into a true regional hub, thanks to substantial investments in modern equipment and deep-water capacity. This strategic positioning provides privileged access not only to the Togolese market but also to many countries in the sub-region, thereby enhancing Togo’s role in continental logistics chains. This momentum aligns perfectly with the country’s national policy for structural development, focused on economic diversification and export promotion.

Recent figures already highlight this success. In 2024, Togolese exports to the United States more than quadrupled in just three years, reaching $97 million, despite the challenges posed by new tariff regulations. The Adétikopé Industrial Platform (PIA), a true engine of industrialization, is positioning Togo as a key player in the textile and manufacturing sectors, fostering job creation and improving living conditions for the population.

This strengthened cooperation between Togo and the United States presents a tremendous opportunity to consolidate economic gains while propelling the country toward inclusive and sustainable growth. The vision driven by Togolese authorities—supported by strategic international partnerships—points to a prosperous future where innovation, regional integration, and human development align for the well-being of all.
