Mali: A new national charter to cement unity and peace

Mali has taken a decisive step toward lasting peace with the official handover of the National Charter for Peace and Reconciliation to the Transitional President, General Assimi Goïta, on Tuesday evening. Drafted by a special commission, the comprehensive charter includes a preamble, 16 titles, 39 chapters, and 106 articles. It represents a historic turning point in the building of a united, sovereign, and reconciled Mali.

The Head of State hailed the charter as a foundational pillar meant to guide all public policies, peace strategies, and collective national action. It reflects the authorities’ determination to provide the country with a legal and institutional framework tailored to its realities—free from foreign interference.

This ambitious document officially replaces the 2015 Algiers Peace and Reconciliation Agreement, which had come to be seen as inadequate and a source of gridlock. From now on, Mali’s sovereignty is expressed through a charter designed by Malians, for Malians.

The new National Charter is built on the principles of inclusiveness, justice, security, and social cohesion. It aims to strengthen coexistence and consolidate national unity at a time when security and community-related challenges demand a coordinated response.
