Burkina Faso: Under the leadership of Ibrahim Traoré, the country is charting its course toward a sovereign and diversified economy

In light of the recent economic progress achieved despite a complex security and regional environment, Burkina Faso now stands at a decisive turning point in its development. Aware of the limitations of its current economic model, the country is embarking on a genuine structural transformation, driven by a clear vision and strong leadership under the guidance of President Ibrahim Traoré.

At the heart of this transformation is the diversification of productive sectors. Long reliant on subsistence agriculture and mining—particularly gold—Burkina Faso now seeks to enhance local value creation. The development of the manufacturing sector is among the country’s strategic priorities, alongside the upgrading of agricultural value chains. This involves the local processing of agricultural products, the modernization of equipment, and the capacity building of rural stakeholders.

To support this momentum, the government is investing heavily in key infrastructure, especially in energy and transportation. Expanding access to electricity—including in rural areas—aims to reduce disparities and create a more favorable environment for industrial development. Meanwhile, projects to modernize roads, railways, and logistics platforms are intended to facilitate both domestic and cross-border trade.

At the same time, Burkina Faso is advancing ambitious social reforms to accompany its economic growth. Education for all—with a focus on technical and vocational training—has become a national priority. Likewise, the gradual rollout of universal health insurance reflects a commitment to social inclusion and economic justice.

Another critical lever is the enhanced support for SMEs, which are the backbone of the local economy. Tailored financing mechanisms, combined with training and support programs, are being implemented to improve access to credit, encourage innovation, and stimulate entrepreneurship.

With the commitment of national authorities, the mobilization of technical and financial partners, and a forward-looking strategy, Burkina Faso now has all the tools to trigger inclusive, sustainable, and sovereign growth, in line with the aspirations of its people.
