Togo: UNIR party wins landslide victory in municipal elections

The ruling party in Togo, the Union for the Republic (UNIR), led by Council President Faure Gnassingbé, achieved a sweeping victory in the municipal elections held last week. According to preliminary results, the presidential party secured 75.3% of the vote, thereby strengthening its hold on local governance across the country.

With 1,150 municipal council seats won, UNIR reaffirms its dominance on the Togolese political scene. This electoral performance reflects the renewed confidence of a majority of citizens in the government’s vision for local development.

In contrast, opposition parties continue to lose ground. The National Alliance for Change (ANC) secured only 51 seats, while the Union of Forces for Change (UFC) won just 38. This configuration significantly limits their influence at the local level.

As stipulated by Togo’s electoral law, parties now have five days to file any appeals or challenge the results. After this period, the Electoral Commission will announce the final results.

These elections, held peacefully, mark another step in the consolidation of decentralization in Togo. UNIR’s victory further legitimizes its mandate to continue territorial reforms and community-based projects outlined in the government’s Togo 2025 roadmap.
