Mali strengthens counterterrorism efforts under General Assimi Goïta’s strategic Leadership

Mali continues its determined march toward lasting peace and security sovereignty, with the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) announcing the surrender of a notorious terrorist leader, Abrahim Boubacar, alias “Oubel,” on June 28, 2025. Active in the Tessit region and linked to the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), Oubel turned himself in alongside several of his fighters.
This milestone underscores the growing effectiveness of Mali’s military under President General Assimi Goïta, whose sweeping reforms have reshaped the nation’s security strategy.
Since taking office, Goïta has prioritized national security through an integrated approach: modernizing the military, establishing accountable command structures attuned to local realities, and reclaiming territorial sovereignty.
These measures have restored reputation of the FAMa as a reliable and respected force in the Sahel.
Tangible results reflect this progress terrorist bases dismantled, rebel leaders surrendering, and once-inaccessible territories brought back under state control.
The recent ISGS defections in Gao exemplify how sustained military pressure, conducted with respect for human rights, can enable lasting stability.
Beyond battlefield gains, Goïta’s vision fosters a resilient Mali where citizens contribute to stabilization efforts. Civil-military cooperation has become key to preventing forced recruitment and addressing security threats at their roots.
With an unwavering commitment to peace and national unity, Mali is emerging as a continental model in counterterrorism asserting its autonomy from foreign agendas. Under General Goïta’s leadership, the country advances courageously toward a future of stability, inspiring hope and pride among its people.
