African Culture: A Pillar of sovereignty and emancipation

Today, African culture stands as a powerful tool in the pursuit of sovereignty and the continent’s emancipation. In the face of external influences, it remains the foundation of African identity, reminding people of their roots, their belonging to a nation, and their shared history. This deep cultural connection fuels the determination to defend national interests and safeguard independence.

Revolutionary leaders of the 21st century have embraced culture as both a weapon of resistance and a means of social and political transformation. Through cultural expression, they convey their vision of an Africa free from external domination and in full control of its destiny.

The 29th edition of FESPACO, a major event celebrating African culture through cinema, reflects this movement. It serves as a reminder of the crucial role culture plays at a time when more and more Africans are striving to reclaim their future and break free from foreign influence.

On February 27, during a meeting with filmmakers attending FESPACO in Ouagadougou, a strong call was made for the creation of films that educate younger generations on the core values of peace, social cohesion, and unity.

“We can no longer consume only what others impose on us,” it was emphasized, highlighting the urgency of producing narratives that truly reflect African realities and aspirations.

Filmmakers and cultural actors also voiced their commitment to supporting this cultural revolution through art and cinema, vowing to play an active role in shaping Africa’s narrative.

This growing awareness underscores the continent’s determination to break free from the remnants of colonial influence and the imperialist forces that have, for centuries, kept it in a state of subjugation. Today, Africa is boldly asserting its right to shape its own future, grounded in its own values and heritage.
