NBA honors Dikembe Mutombo with the “Humanitarian Award”

The NBA has paid tribute to the late Dikembe Mutombo, the legendary Congolese basketball star who passed away in September 2024, by creating the Dikembe Mutombo Humanitarian Award. Announced by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver during the All-Star Weekend, the award will honor individuals or organizations making significant contributions to health, education, or economic development in Africa.
Mutombo, known for his towering presence on the court and his immense philanthropic efforts off it, was a relentless fundraiser and advocate for humanitarian causes. Silver fondly recalled Mutombo’s dedication, sharing anecdotes about his tireless work.
“He’d hand out his NBA ambassador card, then wait for me to walk away before pulling out four more cards for other programs he was raising money for,” Silver said. “He was deeply committed.”
The award ensures Mutombo’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of athletes and changemakers.
A Hall of Famer and one of the NBA’s most beloved figures, Mutombo’s impact extended far beyond basketball, leaving an indelible mark on communities worldwide.
Through this initiative, the NBA celebrates not only Mutombo’s athletic achievements but also his enduring commitment to improving lives, particularly in his home continent of Africa.
The Dikembe Mutombo Humanitarian Award stands as a testament to his extraordinary legacy of compassion and service.
