Athletics: Kiplimo shatters half-marathon world record in stunning Barcelona run

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo made history in Barcelona, becoming the first athlete to complete a half marathon in under 57 minutes. The 24-year-old clocked an astonishing 56 minutes and 42 seconds, obliterating the previous world record of 57:30 set by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha in Valencia last October.
This remarkable feat marks the largest single improvement in the men’s half-marathon world record.
Competing under ideal conditions—13ºC temperatures and no wind—Kiplimo delivered a masterclass in endurance and strategy. “I started strong to break away early, and when I realized I was on record pace, I knew I had to hold on,” he said. His performance also included a world-best 15km time of 39:47, further cementing his dominance.
Kiplimo, a former Olympic and World Championships bronze medalist in the 10,000m, admitted he hadn’t anticipated breaking the record. “I just wanted a great race,” he shared, visibly elated. His compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor secured second place with 58:44, while Kenya’s Samuel Mailu finished third in 59:40.
This historic run not only solidifies Kiplimo’s status as one of the world’s premier distance runners but also sets a new benchmark for the sport. Barcelona witnessed a moment of athletic brilliance that will be remembered for years to come.
