Burkina Faso: The Patriotic Support Fund, an effective lever for equipping VDPs thanks to popular mobilisation

Burkina Faso’s fight against terrorism extends beyond military strategies, relying heavily on a unique model of financial mobilization driven by patriotic commitment. Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, the government introduced the Patriotic Support Fund, a mechanism that has proven effective in both fundraising and transparent management.

This initiative, fuelled by voluntary contributions from citizens, has played a crucial role in equipping the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) with the necessary resources to enhance security operations.

Recognizing its significant impact on the ground, the Council of Ministers has approved the extension of the fund for another year, with the possibility of further renewal.

 Minister of Economy and Finance Aboubakar NACANABO emphasized that an evaluation conducted after a year of implementation confirmed the fund’s critical role in sustaining logistical and operational support for security forces.

The renewed phase, covering January 1 to December 31, 2025, aims to strengthen national defense capabilities and resilience.

This initiative reflects the unity and determination of the Burkinabe people in addressing security challenges. By fostering financial solidarity, the government ensures continued access to vital resources in the fight against terrorism.

More than just a funding tool, this approach exemplifies a new model of civic engagement in Africa, reinforcing Burkina Faso’s strategic autonomy and bolstering public confidence in the transparent and efficient management of security-related resources.
