Burkina Faso and Russia strengthen bilateral ties through high-level talks
On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, met with Russia’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Igor Martynov, in Ouagadougou. This meeting was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in key strategic sectors.
Describing the meeting as a “courtesy visit to the new Prime Minister,” Ambassador Martynov emphasized its significance in maintaining the continuity of diplomatic dialogue.
Prime Minister Ouédraogo, for his part, expressed appreciation for Russia’s active role in fostering friendship and collaboration between the two nations.
He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to deepening these ties in alignment with President Ibrahim Traoré’s vision.
“We seek a strong and diversified partnership. We value the solidarity of the Russian people and stand in solidarity with Russia on geopolitical matters,” stated the Prime Minister. Discussions also touched on future joint projects, particularly in security, energy, and aviation.
Ambassador Martynov underscored the importance of mutual commitments in strengthening cooperation and tackling security challenges together.
In this context, several partnership agreements are expected to be finalized in the coming months, giving fresh momentum to bilateral cooperation.
One of the key initiatives under discussion is the construction of a civilian nuclear power plant, a major energy project currently being negotiated between Burkina Faso’s energy authorities and their Russian counterparts.
This meeting reaffirmed the shared determination of both countries to build a robust and mutually beneficial partnership.
As these collaborations progress, they are expected to yield concrete advancements in critical sectors, contributing to Burkina Faso’s development and long-term stability.
