Football/England Proposes Friendly Match Against Senegal at Historic Venue

England has extended an invitation to Senegal for a friendly match on June 10, set to take place at City Ground, Nottingham Forest’s home stadium in West Bridgford. The venue, which holds 30,600 spectators, has historical significance, as it last hosted England over a century ago in a 2-0 victory against Wales on March 15, 1909.

This friendly would mark England’s final match of the season, following their World Cup qualifying trip to Andorra on June 7. The Football Association is awaiting Senegal’s response to the proposal.

A source from Senegal’s football federation confirmed the invitation, stating, “We’ve received the request and are reviewing it,” without providing further details.

If accepted, the match would be the second meeting between the two nations. Their first encounter was in the Round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where England triumphed 3-0.

The prospect of a rematch excites fans, particularly with several Senegalese internationals having ties to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Senegal’s football federation is focused on transitioning to a new coach. Pape Thiaw, recent CHAN-winning coach, is set to replace Aliou Cissé, whose decade-long tenure delivered Senegal’s first-ever AFCON title in 2021.

Additionally, Ireland has proposed hosting Senegal in Dublin on June 6 or 7, a potential first-ever meeting between the teams.
