Operation Djèkabara: The AES steps up its fight against terrorism in the tri-border area

In a significant display of regional military collaboration, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) launched a large-scale operation named “Djèkabara” between December 15 and 22, 2024, near Tessit, approximately 145 kilometers from Gao.

This operation marked a critical step in combating armed terrorist groups (ATGs) operating in the strategic tri-border area linking Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

Coordinated offensive yields strategic gains

Carried out by the combined forces of the three AES member states, Djèkabara targeted key terrorist strongholds in the region.

The operation achieved notable results, including the dismantling of several enemy camps, the destruction of vehicles such as pick-up trucks and motorcycles used by militants, and the seizure of significant supplies.

The offensive also showcased the effective use of aerial support to complement ground troops, providing a tactical edge in challenging terrain.

This coordinated effort underscores the AES’s determination to assert control and eliminate threats to security in this volatile region.

Strengthening regional unity and Sovereignty

Beyond the military achievements, Djèkabara highlights the growing unity and strategic alignment among the armed forces of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. By working together, these nations aim to protect their citizens and safeguard the stability of their territories.

The operation embodies the AES’s broader mission to reinforce sovereignty and collective security in the Sahel.

A Strong signal of resolve

As security challenges persist, Djèkabara represents a crucial milestone in the fight against terrorism, sending a clear message: the AES member states are resolute in their commitment to dismantling terrorist networks and fostering lasting peace through unified action. This operation serves as a testament to the power of regional solidarity in overcoming shared threats.
