Sahel: ECOWAS nationals welcome the visa-free access to AES countries

The member states of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—continue to demonstrate their commitment to regional solidarity and integration.

A key decision by AES authorities to maintain visa-free entry for citizens of ECOWAS member countries, despite their withdrawal from the organization, has drawn widespread praise from African observers and analysts.

This move underscores a pragmatic and inclusive approach, recognizing the deep historical, cultural, and economic ties between the populations of the two blocs.

With nearly 75% of ECOWAS residents having roots in AES nations, limiting cross-border movement would have been both impractical and counterproductive.

Experts highlight the strategic significance of this decision, suggesting it could bolster the AES’s influence on the regional stage.

By advocating a model of integration that prioritizes sovereignty and shared values, the Sahelian states are positioning themselves as champions of a new, cooperative vision for Africa.

For the region’s citizens, the policy represents continuity and respect for the interconnected social and familial dynamics that transcend national borders.

Analysts believe this kind of initiative strengthens the AES leadership’s legitimacy and showcases their capacity to address the real needs of their people effectively.
