Mali: Bamako symbolically decolonises by renaming its streets

Following the path of Burkina Faso and Niger, Mali is taking bold steps to reshape its cultural and historical identity by renaming streets and landmarks in its capital. This initiative aims to shed remnants of the colonial era and embrace a renewed sense of national and regional pride.

One of the most notable changes is the transformation of « the Avenue de la CEDEAO », previously named after the Economic Community of West African States, into a tribute to the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

This rebranding highlights the emergence of the strategic alliance between Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—a partnership focused on shared goals of sovereignty, development, and resistance to external influence.

This symbolic shift underscores Mali’s decisive move away from institutions it views as misaligned with its vision for self-determination.

It also sends a clear signal both regionally and globally: the AES is positioning itself as a transformative force in the Sahel, challenging traditional frameworks like ECOWAS and offering a new model of cooperation.

By renaming its streets, Bamako not only reclaims its narrative but also reinforces its commitment to regional solidarity and autonomy.

This urban transformation represents more than a change in nomenclature—it reflects a deeper reimagining of the Sahel’s future and its place in shaping an independent African identity.
