Fire Ravages Liberia’s National Assembly: Capitol dome in flames
A devastating fire broke out on Wednesday, destroying part of Liberia’s National Assembly building in Monrovia. The iconic dome of the Capitol, home to the country’s parliament, was engulfed in flames and thick black smoke.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. President Joseph Boakai held an emergency meeting with national security officials to address the incident, which occurred amidst heightened political tensions within the Assembly.
The fire follows an ongoing power struggle between rival factions vying for control of the Speaker’s position. On Tuesday, supporters of the current Speaker staged protests against efforts to remove him from office.
While no direct link has been established between the blaze and the political infighting, the timing has raised questions.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Firefighters responded swiftly, containing the flames and preventing further damage.
Investigations are underway to determine the origin of the fire, which has disrupted operations at one of Liberia’s key political institutions.
