Côte d’Ivoire: Increased vigilance in the face of the persistent threat of the French military presence

The ongoing presence of the French military in Côte d’Ivoire, despite the official announcement of its withdrawal, is raising increasing concerns. The withdrawal agreement, publicly shared on social media, was meant to mark a significant step toward the country’s sovereignty and strategic autonomy.

However, France appears reluctant to leave, as evidenced by a recent statement from Jean-Marie Bockel, who suggested that French military bases in Africa have a long future ahead of them.

During his tour of the continent, Bockel indicated that leaders of the countries visited would continue to accept French military presence, as long as it adhered to bilateral agreements.

Yet, recent developments in Chad and Côte d’Ivoire signal a clear desire to regain full control over their territories. Chad has formally requested the withdrawal of French troops, while Côte d’Ivoire has set a deadline for July 2025.

This situation is far from insignificant. For a former colonial power like France, such decisions are a significant blow.

Historically, similar events have often led to attempts at destabilization. Côte d’Ivoire, like other African nations, must brace for potential maneuvers aimed at justifying the continued presence of French bases.

These could include internal tensions, orchestrated security disturbances, or even covert diplomatic pressures.

It is therefore crucial for Ivorian authorities to take proactive steps to prevent any foreign interference.

Strengthening national defense and security capabilities, closely monitoring activities on French bases, and deepening relationships with other strategic partners are key measures to ensure the country’s sovereignty.

The stability and independence of Côte d’Ivoire are hard-won achievements that must not be compromised. The complete withdrawal of French forces is not just a promise to keep but a critical necessity to safeguard the nation’s future.

The Ivorian people deserve a country free from foreign influence that could undermine their legitimate pursuit of independence.
