Burkina Faso/Ghana: President Ibrahim TRAORE applies the values of good neighbourliness
On Monday, December 9, 2024, Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, extended his heartfelt congratulations to Ghana’s new president, John Dramani Mahama. The former Ghanaian leader, who previously served as president, was elected following the presidential election held on Saturday, December 7, 2024. His return to office comes after nearly eight years out of the political spotlight.
“I extend my warmest congratulations to President John Dramani Mahama on his resounding victory in the presidential election held on Saturday, December 7, 2024,” President Traoré shared on his official X account.
This gesture highlights the Burkinabe leader’s commitment to fostering good neighborly relations, as observed by various commentators. Burkina Faso and Ghana share a 549-kilometer-long border and enjoy strong bonds of friendship, fraternity, and cooperation.
At such a pivotal moment in Ghana’s political history, President Traoré’s expression of solidarity reflects a spirit of camaraderie. “I hope that his term as President of our sister nation Ghana will further strengthen the enduring ties of good neighborliness between our two countries. Together, we can build a more robust, integrated, and resilient sub-region that ensures the well-being of our peoples,” Traoré added in his congratulatory message.
At 66 years old, John Dramani Mahama takes over the presidency from Nana Akufo-Addo, who served two terms in office.
According to reports, 18 million registered voters participated in the December 7 elections to select both the president and parliamentary representatives.
