Formula1/ Verstappen heads to Rwanda for Junior development project after FIA sanction
Max Verstappen, reigning Formula 1 world champion, is set to visit Rwanda next week as part of a grassroots development initiative with young motorsport competitors. This activity is linked to a disciplinary action imposed by the FIA following a controversial outburst during the Singapore Grand Prix.
The penalty, which Verstappen once called « ridiculous, » requires him to complete public interest work. It will coincide with the FIA’s annual prize-giving gala, scheduled to take place in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. Verstappen, alongside the top three F1 championship drivers, is obligated by FIA regulations to attend this event.
A Unique Approach to Penalty
As part of the visit, Verstappen will engage with junior racers in a program organized by the Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC).
This initiative includes showcasing a locally built FIA-approved affordable cross car, designed from blueprints provided by the governing body.
The activity highlights the FIA’s commitment to promoting motorsport accessibility in underrepresented regions.
The locally constructed cross car embodies sustainability and innovation, marking a milestone for Rwanda’s burgeoning motorsport scene.
A Wider Controversy
Verstappen’s punishment and similar sanctions for other drivers, including Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, have sparked discontent within the Formula 1 community.
The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) issued a strongly worded open letter, urging the FIA to adopt a more respectful approach toward drivers.
The letter also criticized FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem for his “tone and language” when discussing disciplinary measures.
Despite the controversy, Verstappen’s participation in Rwanda underscores the growing focus on global motorsport development and may help repair strained relations between drivers and the FIA.
The Kigali event is poised to be a blend of celebration and education, spotlighting both champions and future talents.
