Burkina Faso/Local consumption: Adding value to Burkina Faso’s cotton fabric

In Burkina Faso, authorities are taking another step to promote and enhance local products, such as the Burkinabe cotton fabric known as « Faso Dan Fani ». As of now, judges and court clerks will wear attire made from Faso Dan Fani, following a decision made by the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, after discussions with the stakeholders involved.

The judicial robes for judges and clerks will be crafted from Faso Dan Fani. According to government officials, these new court costumes are less expensive than imported ones, encouraging their use among Burkinabe judges and clerks.

Discussions are also underway with other legal professions, such as lawyers, bailiffs, and notaries, to adopt a similar initiative that highlights the entire value chain of Burkinabe cotton, including the remarkable work of local weavers.

It is important to note that the Burkinabe authorities, led by President Captain Ibrahim Traoré, are committed to reducing imports in favor of local production, promoting entrepreneurship through significant support for initiatives like this. This strategy aims to empower local actors and drive economic growth in Burkina Faso.

Additionally, the Burkinabe government, under President Ibrahim Traoré’s leadership, is focused on revolutionizing the cotton sector by maximizing cotton production and initiating local processing of this « white gold ». This includes the establishment of the IRO-TEXBURKINA textile factory, which will create multiple job opportunities for young Burkinabe.
