Togo / Universal health insurance for students: A decisive turning point in President Faure Gnassingbé’s social policy
Since the start of the 2024-2025 academic year, the Togolese government, under the leadership of President Faure Gnassingbé, has strengthened health coverage for preschool, primary, and secondary students in public institutions. With a focus on well-being for all, the « School Assur » program, launched in 2017, is now integrated into the national Universal Health Insurance (AMU) system.
This integration allows students to benefit from the advantages of AMU, managed by the National Health Insurance Institute (INAM), thereby facilitating access to quality care.
This decision marks a significant turning point for the presidential program, which, by becoming « School AMU », simplifies and enhances the conditions for student care. The goal is to ensure that every learner has more accessible health services, with streamlined processes and extensive coverage across the country. Efforts are underway to effectively and uniformly implement these new measures throughout the nation.
As of September 1, 2024, the impact of « School Assur » is already evident: a total of 4,651,247 medical services have been provided, benefiting approximately 1,969,007 students from public institutions and vocational training centers. These services include consultations, tests, hospitalizations, surgical procedures, and pharmaceutical care.
By enhancing access to healthcare for students, President Faure Gnassingbé reaffirms his commitment to promoting equal opportunities and the well-being of young Togolese generations, while positioning the country within a framework of national solidarity.
