Premier League: Chelsea officials address racism scandal involving Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea has broken its silence on the racism scandal involving Enzo Fernandez, with statements from Enzo Maresca and Reece James. Previously, no member of Chelsea had publicly commented on the Enzo Fernandez incident.

To recap, the Argentine midfielder was filmed live on social media with his Albiceleste teammates, singing a racist and transphobic song targeting the French. Quickly, various Chelsea players, including Wesley Fofana and Christopher Nkunku, as well as players from other clubs like Mike Maignan, spoke out. The English club announced it had opened an investigation, while Fernandez apologized. This time, it was Enzo Maresca who spoke out, asserting that the controversy is over.

“From the moment the player made a statement, apologized, and the club did the same, I don’t think there’s anything more to add to this situation. The situation is already clear and straightforward”, began the new Blues coach in a press conference, attributing the incident to clumsiness. “It was obviously a very complicated situation”, he acknowledged. “Enzo admitted he acted wrongly. He apologized to the club, the team, and those offended. He hasn’t arrived yet, so I don’t think there’s anything else to say. I will have to speak out when he returns. I hope everyone will be on the same page and we can move forward ”, assured the Englishman, who plans to discuss the matter with his teammate. Currently on vacation and absent from the club’s American tour, Enzo Fernandez is expected to face his teammates upon his return.
