Togo: Strengthening relations between Togo and the Commonwealth, a partnership for development
On Tuesday, July 16, 2024, an important working session was held at the Togolese Prime Minister’s office, bringing together members of the government and a delegation from the Commonwealth of Nations. Led by Secretary General Patricia Scotland, this meeting aimed to strengthen the partnership between Togo and the Commonwealth, discussing the country’s political and socio-economic context and revitalizing their collaboration.
Togo’s accession to the Commonwealth in June 2022 marked a decisive turning point in the country’s foreign policy. This strategic decision aimed to diversify Togo’s international partnerships and benefit from the expertise and resources offered by this multilateral organization. The Commonwealth, comprising 56 member states sharing common values of democracy, development, and respect for human rights, provides Togo with a unique platform to strengthen its institutional and socio-economic capacities.
The Commonwealth supports Togo in improving its governance by offering training programs for civil servants and encouraging institutional reforms. These initiatives aim to promote transparency, administrative efficiency, and the fight against corruption.
By integrating into the Commonwealth’s economic networks, Togo gains expanded access to international markets and trade and investment opportunities. This openness fosters economic growth and job creation, contributing to the improvement of living conditions for the Togolese people.
The working session on July 16, 2024, reaffirmed the mutual commitment of Togo and the Commonwealth to strengthen their partnership. The discussions focused on concrete projects aimed at enhancing cooperation in key areas of sustainable development, technological innovation, and youth promotion.
