Togo: Human Development Index, When the country achieves performance every year
Togo, under the presidency of Faure Gnassingbé, has undertaken various programs and projects in recent years aimed at improving the Human Development Index (HDI) of the country, which measures longevity and health, income level, and education level.
In terms of health and longevity, Togo has made notable efforts to strengthen its healthcare system. Investments have been made to improve healthcare infrastructure, increase access to primary healthcare, and combat endemic diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS. Infant mortality has also decreased due to improved vaccination coverage and nutrition programs.
Regarding income and the economy, Togo has implemented policies to stimulate economic growth and reduce poverty. Economic reforms have included improving the business climate, promoting foreign investment, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has seen growth, although challenges related to equitable wealth distribution remain significant.
In terms of education, the government has focused its efforts on improving access to education and the quality of teaching. Implementing free primary education and constructing new schools have increased enrollment rates. Additionally, continuous training programs for teachers and initiatives to promote girls’ education have been deployed, reducing gender disparities in education.
These combined efforts have led to a gradual improvement in Togo’s HDI for its population. This year, the report reveals that Togo’s Human Development Index rose from 0.539 in 2021-2022 to 0.547 in 2023-2024, while Gross National Income per capita increased from $2,167 to $2,214 over the same periods.
As a result, Togo is ranked first for the second consecutive year within the UEMOA (West African Economic and Monetary Union) and fourth this year within ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States).
While the country remains classified among those with medium human development, these advancements reflect the effectiveness of policies and programs implemented under President Faure Gnassingbé’s leadership. The challenge for Togo is to sustain and accelerate these progressions to achieve sustainable and inclusive human development.
