Russia/North Korea: Russian and North Korean leaders opt for mutual assistance in case of aggression

In the event of aggression against either, Russia and North Korea have decided to unite to face the challenge. This decision was made by the leaders of the two nuclear powers, President Vladimir Putin and his North Korean counterpart, Kim Jong Un.

According to reports, a formal agreement was signed between the two partners on Wednesday, June 19, 2024. This marked President Putin’s first visit to Pyongyang in 24 years. North Korean President Kim Jong Un described the treaty as forward-looking and exclusively peaceful.

President Putin, on his part, acknowledged Pyongyang’s right to take measures to ensure its security. The Kremlin leader also mentioned that Russia does not rule out military-technical cooperation with North Korea. Furthermore, Putin thanked Kim Jong Un for his support during Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Since Russia’s military operation in Ukraine began in February 2022, Moscow and Pyongyang have drawn closer in response to what they perceive as Western hegemony. Alongside Kim Jong Un, President Putin expressed a desire for the United Nations sanctions against North Korea to be reconsidered.
