Burkina Faso: Suspension of Mandeka and Pulaagu channels by the Superior Council of Communication

The Superior Council of Communication (CSC) of Burkina Faso has made the decision to suspend two new Canal+ channels named « Mandeka » and « Pulaagu ».

According to sources, these two channels have « significant cultural and social impact » in Burkina Faso. Before allowing their broadcast, the CSC deems it necessary to conduct a thorough evaluation of the content offered by these channels. This approach aims to ensure that the programs respect the country’s cultural norms and values.

Based on the current legislation and as a precautionary measure, the CSC has ordered the suspension of « Mandeka » and « Pulaagu » until further notice. This decision allows the CSC to have the necessary time to carefully examine the cultural and social implications of the programs broadcast by these channels.

The temporary suspension of the channels underscores the importance that the Superior Council of Communication places on preserving the cultural and social values of Burkina Faso. It also highlights the crucial role of the CSC in media regulation to ensure the dissemination of content in accordance with the law and respectful of local sensitivities.

Canal+ officials will need to work closely with the CSC to address the raised concerns and ensure that the channels comply with Burkina Faso’s regulatory requirements. This situation highlights the challenges faced by international broadcasters when entering markets with specific cultural and legislative contexts.
