DRC: Parliamentary diplomacy, Vital Kamerhe’s solution for peace in North Kivu

Upon becoming the President of the permanent office of the National Assembly, Vital Kamerhe, in his first speech, emphasized the approach of parliamentary diplomacy to restore peace in North Kivu. Immediately after his election as President of the National Assembly, Vital Kamerhe centered his speech on the war in the east of the country, calling on fellow legislators to contribute to ending the chaos.

« This event comes at a time when the enemies of democracy have acted criminally against our state, sowing a river of blood in a predatory adventure that has lasted too long and which we are determined to end », declared the new President of the National Assembly on Thursday, May 24, 2024. He further added, « I would like to address the issues of parliamentary diplomacy. The honorable deputies must involve themselves not only in matters of regional and international cooperation but also in issues concerning the return of peace to the east of our country. No one ignores that the Democratic Republic of Congo is currently facing a fierce aggression in its eastern part caused by Rwanda and Uganda ».

Vital Kamerhe is convinced that restoring peace will allow the Congolese people to turn their natural resources into a real asset that will place the country at the heart of the energy transition. « We will together transform what currently appears as a curse of our natural resources into a real asset that will place the DRC at the heart of the energy transition, which humanity is compelled to undertake due to the adverse effects of climate change », he stated.

Today, the situation remains concerning despite multiple attempts by the FARDC to liberate certain territories occupied by the M23 rebel group with the support of Rwanda.
