Togo: The Togolese Government in Transitional Period

In Togo, The government led by Madam Victoire Sidémého Tomégah-Dogbé is currently in a transitional period, handling routine administrative affairs. This is the norm following the resignation of the government, allowing public administration to continue functioning while a new government team is formed.

Madam Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé, who has been leading the 33-member government since September 30, 2020, presented her resignation and that of her team to the President of the Republic, H.E. Faure Essozimna GNASSINGBE. As is customary in Togo after the legislative elections held on April 29, it was appropriate for the executive to step down to allow for the formation of a new team.

Currently, the 33 outgoing ministers and delegates are responsible for managing the routine affairs of their respective departments. This transitional period is crucial to ensure the continuity of administration and the proper functioning of public institutions.

It is worth noting that Togo recently adopted a new constitution, promulgated on May 6 by the President of the Republic. This new fundamental law introduces a significant regime change, transitioning from a presidential system to a parliamentary system.

In this new framework, the President of the Republic, with an honorary title, is elected by parliamentarians for a four-year term, renewable once. Additionally, the role of the Prime Minister will be replaced by that of the President of the Council of Ministers, who will be chosen from within the majority party in the National Assembly by the elected representatives for a six-year term.
