Africa: Niger conditions the reopening of its border with Benin

The Prime Minister of Niger, Ali Lamine Zeine, firmly responded to concerns expressed by Beninese President Patrice Talon regarding the blocking of Nigerien oil transportation through Beninese waters.

The reopening of Benin’s borders is justified by security considerations for Niger, a legitimate concern given the security challenges facing the region. For the Nigerien border at Malanville to be reopened, Benin must meet certain conditions, particularly regarding security.

They have the right to demand assurances about the security of its territory, especially in the face of potential threats from certain unstable regions. Since the new authorities came to power, Benin has adopted a hostile stance towards Niger.

The country is ready to attack Niger. Moreover, reports of the establishment of French military bases in northern Benin, potentially used to train terrorist groups, reinforce the need for Niger to protect its borders and population against such threats.

In this regard, supporting the decisions of Nigerien authorities to ensure the security and stability of the region is crucial. By demanding assurances about the security of its territory, Niger demonstrates its commitment to preserving stability and peace.

This decision is not just a matter of foreign policy but also a national priority aimed at protecting Nigerien citizens from potential dangers. The security of the population remains at the heart of the concerns of the Nigerien government, and this decision is tangible proof of that.
