Russia: Vladimir Putin officially sworn in for a 5th term

Russian President Vladimir Putin, triumphantly re-elected following last March’s presidential election, took the oath of office on Tuesday, May 7, during a solemn ceremony, for his fifth 6-year term at the helm of the world’s largest country.

« I swear to respect and protect the rights and freedoms of man and citizen, to respect and protect the Constitution, sovereignty, independence, security, and integrity of the government », he declared.

The Kremlin leader also pledged on Tuesday to his population in his inauguration speech that they would « together » overcome and emerge « stronger » from a « difficult period », amid an armed conflict against Ukraine.

« We are a united and great people, and together, we will overcome all obstacles […] Together, we will win », he asserted.

Leading Russia, « is a great honor, responsibility, and sacred duty », added Putin, before stating that Russian citizens had affirmed the « rightness » of the country’s path in the presidential election, which, according to him, was of great importance against the backdrop of « serious challenges » currently facing his country.

« I see a deep understanding of our common historical objectives, a determination to resolutely defend our choice, our values, freedom, and Russia’s national interests », he said.

As for diplomatic relations, Vladimir Putin expressed his country’s readiness to strengthen cooperation with « all countries that consider Russia a reliable and honest partner », which he described as a « world majority ».
