Mali: National phase of Inter-Malian dialogue opens this monday

The national phase of the inter-Malian dialogue kicks off on Monday, May 6, 2024, focusing on themes of peace, security, and national reconciliation. Until May 10, when the dialogue will conclude, political actors, civil society organizations, and all components of Malian society will come together to reflect on the country’s challenges and find solutions.

Through inclusive discussions, participants are called upon to identify conflict resolution mechanisms and overcome obstacles to peace, notably addressing crucial issues such as security and political restructuring.

It’s worth noting that the steering committee of the inter-Malian dialogue has established a discussion plan with three phases. The communal phases were held from April 13 to 15, 2024, followed by the regional phases on April 20, 21, and 22, 2024, across the 19 regions, the district of Bamako, embassies, consulates, and now the national phase opening this Monday.

Discussions initiated at the local level primarily focused on political issues, specifically the extension of the transition period. According to some sources, the national phase also follows the same logic. The inter-Malian dialogue primarily aims at peace and national reconciliation, seeking to restore cohesion by addressing the root causes of crises.

The effectiveness of a dialogue or agreement depends not only on the presence of mediation but mainly on the willingness of stakeholders to work together for peace. Hence, the transitional authorities deemed it appropriate to conduct this discussion among Malians themselves without seeking external assistance.

As a reminder, the steering committee of the inter-Malian dialogue consists of 140 members representing various sectors such as the Malian Armed Forces, the judiciary, the Malian bar association, political parties, the press, arts and culture, religious denominations, civil society organizations, community associations, and the private sector, with the mission of ensuring that voices are heard.
