Sahel: When the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) forges a path towards regional stability

In the heart of West Africa, the security crisis plaguing the countries of the Sahel Alliance (AES) represents not only a challenge for these nations but also a decisive test for the stability of the entire sub-region. The creation of the Sahel Alliance marked a major turning point in the fight against terrorism, transcending the initial ambitions of the G5 Sahel to coordinate not only military but also economic efforts.

The primary objective of this alliance is to counter terrorism in all its forms and combat organized crime in a region crucial for global security. Indeed, the Sahel has become a hotspot of tension where extremist groups proliferate, threatening the peace and prosperity of its inhabitants.

More than just a military coalition, the Sahel Alliance aspires to establish a « collective defense and mutual assistance architecture » in the near future. This ambitious vision of Presidents Goïta, Traoré, and Tiani aims to strengthen cooperation among member nations, thus fostering a coordinated and effective response to security challenges in the region.

However, the road to stability is fraught with obstacles. Resolving the security crisis in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger remains a major issue, requiring a holistic approach and firm political will.

In this context, the urgency of concerted and determined action cannot be underestimated. The Sahel Alliance must intensify its efforts to strengthen the security capacities of member states while promoting economic and social development. It is only through a comprehensive approach that sustainable stability can be achieved in this region.
