Togo : Unanimous Adoption of Electoral Amendments at the National Assembly

The National Assembly unanimously approved the government-presented bill, stemming from the proposals of the Permanent Consultation Framework (CPC). This bill amends articles 2, 24, and 28 of the organic law No. 2012-123 of June 6, 2012, determining the number of deputies in the National Assembly, eligibility conditions, incompatibility rules, and procedures for filling vacant seats.

The modification aims to adapt these provisions to the new electoral context and the requirements of the multiple-election process, particularly the upcoming legislative and regional elections scheduled for the first quarter of 2024. Adjustments include changes in the deadlines for certain electoral process tasks, such as the submission of candidacy files, payment of deposits, and the timeframes for making decisions in case of a challenge to the refusal of candidate registration.

The distribution of the number of deputies per constituency will soon be defined by a presidential decree. The bill was unanimously passed, indicating a consensus among the various political parties represented in the National Assembly.

This modification of electoral provisions reflects an approach to addressing political developments and ensuring a transparent electoral process in line with democratic standards. The reform has been applauded for its goal of strengthening the electoral framework and ensuring fairness and equality in the democratic process in Togo.
