Niger/Electricity: Nigeriens can count on the support of their neighbours, Libyans

In the framework of the long-standing cooperation with Niger, the sister and neighboring Republic of Libya, comes to the rescue of the Nigerian people in terms of electricity which causes problems in the country since Nigeria decided to deprive its neighbor of electricity, in order to claim the reinstatement of Bazoum in power.

On Tuesday, January 9, the Nigerian Minister of State for Public Security, General Mohamed Toumba and the Libyan Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E.M Issa Majid Mansour, discussed the possibility of strengthening their friendship and cooperation in the field of security and migration.

Following this meeting, a delegation of Libyan electrical engineers landed in Niamey on Thursday, January 11, to provide their expertise to the Nigerien Electricity Company (Nigelec), according to the information available. This initiative contributes to the process of strengthening the cooperation between the two African states and the socio-cultural integration between the peoples of both countries.

As a reminder, the Nigerian government had suspended the supply of electricity to Niger in August of last year as part of the unjust heavy sanctions imposed by ECOWAS on the sister country. According to a report from Nigelec, in 2022, 70% of Niger’s electricity came from purchases from the Nigerian company Mainstream.

The decision by the Nigerian authorities to deprive the neighboring country of electricity has had significant consequences on the activities and daily lives of Nigeriens. For these reasons, the authorities in Niger have committed firmly to diversifying energy sources. They have turned particularly towards renewable energies to better meet the needs of the population.

The support of the Arab Republic of Libya in this field would be an asset to Niger, ensuring sustainable access to electricity for the Nigerien people.
