Mali: Reasons for the Slight Postponement of the Presidential Election Scheduled for February 2024

The presidential election in Mali, originally set for Sundays, February 4th and 18th, as part of the country’s transition to civilian rule, has been postponed. The announcement came on Monday, September 25, 2023, through a statement given to the press by the government’s spokesperson, Colonel Abdoulaye MAÏGA.

The delay is due to a few reasons, primarily technical in nature. However, the Malian authorities have also pointed to several factors that need consideration in organizing the presidential election. These factors include the introduction of new constitutional provisions in the electoral law, particularly the extension of the time gap between the two rounds of presidential elections.

Another critical factor is the inclusion of results from the annual revision of the electoral lists, scheduled to take place from October 1st to December 31st, 2023. These results will be integrated into the electoral database starting from January 2024. The government views this as a vital step to ensure wide participation by Malians in the upcoming elections.

In addition, authorities are working to resolve a dispute with the French company IDEMIA, which has been involved in the registration process. This issue is under discussion to ensure a smooth election process.

The new election dates will be announced later after discussions with the Independent Electoral Management Authority (AIGE), according to the transitional government. The aim is to ensure that all necessary preparations and adjustments are made to conduct a credible and inclusive election.

Postponing the election is a significant decision, as it underscores the importance of proper preparation and inclusivity in the electoral process. It also highlights the commitment of Malian authorities to conducting a fair and transparent election, ultimately leading to the return of civilian rule. The government’s decision to consider various factors and consult with relevant stakeholders demonstrates a dedication to upholding democratic principles in Mali.
