Morocco: Villagers face difficulties after the earthquake
Following the earthquake that struck the Al Haouz region south of Marrakech in Morocco on 8 September, many villages in the High Atlas Mountains were completely destroyed.
The inhabitants have taken refuge in yellow tents provided by the government, but they are facing urgent needs, particularly in terms of housing, food and blankets. With the approach of the rainy season and the cold weather, the situation is becoming increasingly worrying, especially for children.
Although aid is being sent to some remote areas in the form of temporary tents, this will not be enough as weather conditions deteriorate. This earthquake is the deadliest in Morocco since the 1960 Agadir earthquake, affecting more than 300,000 people, a third of whom are children.
The reconstruction task facing Morocco is immense, especially as the country was already facing economic difficulties and years of drought.
The disaster left many houses uninhabited in rural areas, and the inhabitants do not have the resources to rebuild them quickly, if at all, without substantial aid.
