Burkina Faso: Iran plans to build a refinery, fruit of a good relationship

Iran, one of the world’s leading oil producers, has announced its ambition to expand its oil operations in Africa. Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s country, Burkina Faso, is at the heart of this ambitious strategy, with the main project being the construction of a refinery on its territory.

At a recent meeting between the Iran and Burkina Faso authorities, Iranian Oil Minister Javad Oji expressed his country’s willingness to work closely with Burkina Faso, mobilising specialists from both nations to carry out this major project.

This expertise, combined with Burkina Faso’s desire to diversify its energy sources and develop its energy infrastructure, could make the project a mutually beneficial collaboration.

The visit of the head of Burkina Faso’s diplomacy, Olivia Rouamba, to Tehran bears witness to the two countries’ desire to strengthen their relations. Such partnerships can shape the future of South-South cooperation.

With regard to military cooperation with other countries in particular, the Burkina Faso authorities are now opting to diversify their partnerships in order to optimise the specific strengths of each partner. These partnerships will be based on respect for the sovereignty of Burkina Faso.
