Burkina Faso: The bravery and determination of the armed forces in Koumbri

In a region once bloodied by terrorism, Burkina Faso’s armed forces have recently written a demonstrative chapter in their fight for peace and national security. The 12th Commando Infantry Regiment (12ème RIC) embarked on a daring operation to retake the town of Koumbri, located in the province of Yatenga, one of the minor and notoriously dangerous areas yet to be freed from the grip of terrorism.

The revolutionary unit deployed on this mission faced a series of incidents and harassing fire as it advanced. However, these intrepid fighters showed unshakeable determination until they reached their objective. The dawn of Monday 04 September 2023 will forever be remembered by those who took part in this operation. The advance elements were engaged in a fierce battle with the enemy forces, demonstrating exceptional bravery. They not only repelled the enemy attack, but also managed to neutralise several dozen terrorists.

The cost of this victory was high, with fifty-three valiant fighters sacrificing their lives for the security of their nation. Among the missing, seventeen soldiers and thirty-six People’s Defence Volunteers (PDVs) gave their lives for the cause. In addition, around thirty wounded were evacuated and are currently being treated. Immediate retaliation operations, supported by aerial vectors, were launched to neutralise the fleeing assailants and destroy their combat equipment. These operations are continuing with determination in the area.

In a press release issued on Tuesday 05 September, the Chief of Staff of Burkina Faso’s armed forces expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the soldiers and VDP who made the ultimate sacrifice in this offensive to regain national territory. He also wished the wounded a speedy recovery. He also reassured the public that this act of cowardice would not go unpunished. All the necessary resources are being mobilised to track down the fleeing terrorists and prevent them from doing any more harm.

It is important to note that this operation in Koumbri is a vibrant testimony to the bravery and unshakeable determination of Burkina Faso’s armed forces in their relentless fight against terrorism.
