Burkina Faso / President Ibrahim Traoré and his government launch an “Agropastoral Offensive 2023-2025” for a prosperous and sovereign Burkina Faso
Aware of the challenges of food sovereignty and job creation, President Ibrahim Traoré has made the promotion of agriculture and livestock farming a priority of his term of office. The «Agropastoral Offensive 2023-2025» plan is the cornerstone of this vision.
At the Council of Ministers meeting on Wednesday August 30, 2023, Agriculture Minister Ismaël Sombié presented an ambitious operational plan to promote food sovereignty and generate decent jobs in Burkina Faso’s agropastoral sector. Dubbed the «Agropastoral Offensive 2023-2025» the plan covers a variety of areas, including corn, rice, potatoes, wheat, fish, livestock and meat, as well as poultry. The key objectives of this initiative are to increase Burkina Faso’s food sovereignty, create jobs, and contribute to macroeconomic development.
It is essential to note that food sovereignty implies not only the availability of foodstuffs, but also access to nutritious, affordable food for all citizens.
One of the most promising aspects of this plan is its potential to create decent jobs, particularly in rural areas where unemployment is a major challenge. The Minister of Agriculture has indicated that the plan should lead to the creation of 100,000 jobs in the rural sector. This represents a significant opportunity for young people and rural communities to find stable, decent jobs.
With a solid financing strategy and a commitment to sustainable development, this plan could have a transformative impact on the lives of Burkinabe by ensuring access to quality food while stimulating economic growth. Burkina Faso is moving towards a more prosperous and resilient future thanks to this inspiring vision.
