Niger/Transition Program: ECOWAS’ shameful and sterile threats against the military regime
It’s one thing to express disagreement with the new Niger authorities’ decision for a three (03) year transition, and quite another to make further threats against Niger’s African brothers, like Ecowas is doing.
« The sooner the military return power to civilians, the better », Commissioner Abdel-Fatau Musah was quoted as saying. These are unacceptable remarks coming from someone who is in charge of political affairs, peace and security in the ECOWAS zone, and who says he favors the diplomatic route to resolving the crisis in Niger.
The lisping ECOWAS and its allies forget that they are hurting African brothers and that on Niger territory there are populations of various African nationalities who are also affected by this situation. Far from thinking that by using force on Niger, ECOWAS will be able to clean up its tarnished image among Africans. It would be applauded if this force had instead been used to liberate Niger from the Jihadists.
« We want constitutional order to be restored as quickly as possible », he reportedly added. The whole world is aware of the position of the people of Niger in the face of this military coup and their aspirations for change, which the overthrown president was unable to offer his compatriots.
The West African organization’s persistence in seeking to restore ex-president Bazoum to power at all costs confirms the accusations that « ECOWAS is not a peoples’ organization, but rather that of a few heads of state seeking to satisfy their own interests and those of their Western allies ».
