Togo: What you need to know about the country’s integration into the Global Coalition Against Daesh.

Togo is strengthening its international partnerships in the fight against terrorism. The West African country has officially joined the Global Coalition Against Daesh, a partnership that brings together over 80 governments and institutions committed to combating the terrorist organization. This occurred during a ministerial meeting held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in the presence of the Togolese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Dussey, and the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken.

Under the leadership of the United States of America (USA), this alliance acts in a coordinated manner, using military means but also emphasizing counter-propaganda, combating terrorist financing, and addressing foreign terrorist fighters, with the aim of countering terrorist threats.

In addition to Togo’s membership, the participants discussed the emergence of Daesh affiliates operating in West Africa, the Sahel, East Africa, Central Africa, and Southern Africa.

The Riyadh meeting also provided an opportunity to approve an Action Plan of the Africa Working Group, adopted last March in Niamey, which calls on members to cooperate in strengthening civilian-led counterterrorism capacities and strategic communication in African countries.

For Togo, this membership comes at a time when the country is facing terrorist incursions in its northern region, close to the Sahel, and seeks to enhance its security measures and partnerships.

This should lead to additional support, alongside partners such as the European Union, Germany, and other countries in the sub-region.
