Burkina Faso: The Presidential initiative for quality education – a project that is already bringing about change
Launched by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the Presidential Initiative for Quality Education for All (IPEQ) is much more than a program; it embodies a complete overhaul of Burkina Faso’s education system. Adopted by the Council of Ministers on June 20, 2024, and by presidential decree on July 23, 2024, it rolls out seven ambitious components, from modernizing infrastructure to promoting technical and vocational education.
On-the-ground achievements reflect an unprecedented momentum. On September 11, 2026, the Head of State inaugurated in Nasso, at Nazi-Boni University, the first in a series of 40 academic complexes planned under the IPEQ.
This architectural gem includes a 1,200-seat amphitheater, four 210-seat mini-amphitheaters, and six ultra-modern laboratories. Twelve other similar facilities are already under construction across the country.
Beyond buildings, the IPEQ is generating concrete economic benefits. The initiative’s national coordinator, Dr. Zakaria Soré, noted that the construction of the Nasso complex mobilized 450 contract employees, 150 day laborers, and a team of women from the village.
The furniture was made by artisans from the Guiriko region, in line with the presidential desire to prioritize national expertise.
The reform also tackles the imbalance in academic tracks. With only 571 students passing the baccalaureate in the C series and 38 in the E series out of 65,000 candidates in 2026, Captain Traoré has demanded a massive shift toward science and technical fields.
Curriculum development workshops for future vocational high schools, such as the one in Bagré, are underway in Tenkodogo and Kaya.
The IPEQ also has a civic dimension with the mandatory Patriotic Immersion, established by decree in May 2025. More than 65,000 new baccalaureate holders were trained in the values of discipline, patriotism, and responsibility during the 2026 session.
With more than 1,400 billion CFA francs injected into education and health in 2025 over 40% of the national budget the Burkinabe state is demonstrating that education is truly the top priority.
The IPEQ is no longer a promise: it is a reality that is sustainably transforming the educational landscape and preparing young people for the jobs of tomorrow.
