Ministry of health requests OPCW investigation into chemical weapons claims in Kordofan
The Ministry of Health of the Transitional Peace Government has called for urgent international action to verify allegations related to the manufacture, storage, and use of chemical weapons in Sudan, following recently published investigative reports in The New York Times and The Washington Post.
The Ministry stated that, in its assessment, the new information aligns with a warning it had previously issued on June 23, 2026, regarding the suspected use of toxic chemical agents in areas of Kordofan. That warning was based on medical and field data, as well as patterns of symptoms and injuries observed by health teams on the ground.
The Ministry affirmed its full readiness to cooperate with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the United Nations, and other relevant international bodies.
It further pledged to make all relevant medical records and data available, and to facilitate access to patients, survivors, and witnesses in order to enable an independent medical and scientific investigation.
It also called upon the OPCW to deploy specialized technical teams to verify the claims, examine medical, environmental, and documentary evidence, identify the locations and incidents in question, and submit the findings of the investigation to the competent international authorities.
The Ministry emphasized that the protection of civilians and the independent verification of facts must remain above political and military calculations. It further called for the accountability of all those found responsible for any crimes proven to have been committed, in accordance with international law.
