Football/ Ghana sack Manager Otto Addo ahead of World Cup

Ghana have dismissed head coach Otto Addo just 72 days before their World Cup opener, the Ghana Football Association confirmed on Tuesday.

The decision came swiftly after back-to-back humiliating defeats   a 5-1 thrashing by Austria in Vienna, followed by a 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart extending the Black Stars’ losing run to four consecutive matches.

The GFA announced it had “parted ways” with Addo with immediate effect, stating it would “communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”

The timing raises serious concerns for a nation heading into one of football’s biggest stages. Ghana, drawn in the same group as England, Croatia and Panama, have struggled for form and momentum, also failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations under Addo’s watch; a damaging blow for a country with such rich continental history.

This despite boasting genuine quality in the squad, including Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo and Tottenham forward Mohammed Kudus.

Addo, 50, born in Germany and a former Ghana international with 15 caps, had returned for a second stint in charge in March 2024.

His exit leaves the federation in a race against time to appoint a successor before competitive football begins.

Ghana open their World Cup campaign against Panama on 18 June, before facing England on 23 June and Croatia on 27 June; all at the tournament co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, running from 11 June to 19 July.
