Morocco: Walid Regragui steps down, Mohamed Ouahbi takes over as Atlas Lions coach
The chapter is closed between Walid Regragui and the Moroccan national team. The 50-year-old tactician has decided to end his tenure with the Atlas Lions, bringing to a close a journey marked by both historic highs and disappointing lows.
The chaotic Africa Cup of Nations final loss to Senegal undoubtedly played a role in this departure. Regragui, who led Morocco to a historic semi-final finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar—a first for an African nation—leaves his post just months before the 2026 World Cup.
Taking the reins is Mohamed Ouahbi, a homegrown choice previously in charge of Morocco’s U20 squad. He will be assisted by former international Youssef Hadji.
Time is of the essence for the new leadership. The FIFA World Cup kicks off in just three months, with Morocco placed in Group C alongside football giants Brazil, as well as Scotland and Haiti.
