Tony Yoka denies switch to DR Congo: “I remain a French Olympic Champion”

Tony Yoka has refuted reports that he will represent the Democratic Republic of Congo in future international competitions. In a social media video posted Tuesday, the 2016 Olympic boxing champion clarified that he is not changing his sporting nationality.

“Many rumors are circulating, 99% of which are fake news. There is no question of me changing my sporting nationality,” Yoka stated firmly, confirming he will remain a French athlete.

The confusion arose Monday when the Paris-born boxer shared an image of a Congolese professional license on social media, expressing pride in “showcasing the Democratic Republic of Congo” and thanking Sports Minister Didier Budimbu for his trust.

This sparked speculation about a potential nationality switch ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Yoka explained he recently spent two weeks in his father’s homeland, where he plans to open a boxing academy.

The Congolese license, he clarified, is specifically to participate in a fight scheduled in DRC later this year.

“In no way will I represent the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Olympics. I am and will remain a French Olympic champion,” he emphasized, putting an end to the speculation.
