Burkina Faso/: Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland, unsung heroes and symbols of bravery

In a significant gesture of national gratitude, Burkina Faso has officially recognized the courage of its Volunteers for the Homeland Defense (VDP) through the creation of a dedicated “Medal of Honor.” Instituted by President Captain Ibrahim Traoré, this award pays tribute to the civilians who risk their lives alongside the national defense and security forces in the fight against terrorism.

The VDP, primarily composed of ordinary citizens, have become a vital force in protecting territorial integrity.

Their service extends far beyond local defense, embodying a profound patriotism through personal sacrifice and unwavering dedication.

Often operating anonymously in conflict zones, they have become local heroes, confronting imminent danger to secure their communities.

The medal serves as a national acknowledgment of their bravery and sacrifice. More than a distinction, it reinforces the critical importance of unity and cohesion between the population and the armed forces a crucial element in the nation’s asymmetric war.

The resilience of the VDP reflects the enduring spirit of the Burkinabe people. By officially honouring their devotion, the country pays homage to those who, away from the spotlight, represent the true strength of Burkina Faso: a unified, courageous, and resilient nation standing firm in the face of adversity.
