US and Ukrainian diplomats hold talks in Saudi Arabia to discuss Russo-Ukrainian war resolution

American and Ukrainian diplomats convened in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to explore pathways toward ending the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The discussions, led by the US Secretary of State, aim to prioritize Ukraine’s proposals for achieving peace. Central to Kyiv’s plan is a proposed ceasefire that would extend to the Black Sea region, a critical area of tension.

Russia, closely monitoring the talks, has signalled a willingness to halt hostilities under specific conditions.

Moscow demands that Ukraine abandon its aspirations to join NATO and formally recognize the Russian-annexed territories—amounting to roughly one-fifth of Ukraine’s pre-war land—as part of Russia.

These stipulations, however, remain contentious and are unlikely to be accepted without further negotiation.

The meeting in Jeddah marks a significant effort to rebuild diplomatic momentum between Washington and Kyiv, following the strained relations during the Trump administration.

The failed exchanges between former President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky in February 2020 had left bilateral ties in a precarious state.

While the talks represent a step toward dialogue, the road to peace remains fraught with challenges.

Both sides appear entrenched in their positions, and the prospect of a swift resolution seems distant.

Nevertheless, the Saudi-hosted negotiations underscore the international community’s growing urgency to mediate an end to the devastating conflict.
