Lionel Messi’s FIFA-The best Nomination Sparks debate

Lionel Messi’s inclusion among the finalists for the FIFA-The Best Player of the Year award has sparked widespread debate in the footballing world. The 37-year-old, who now plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), has had a modest year at the club level, raising questions about the criteria for his nomination.

Messi’s club achievements in 2024 include winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record. However, Inter Miami’s playoff campaign ended abruptly with a first-round elimination against Atlanta United.

 Despite this, Messi’s success on the international stage with Argentina, particularly their Copa América triumph this past summer, appears to be the defining factor in his nomination.

Spanish outlet Relevo highlighted Messi’s central role in Argentina’s victory, noting that his leadership and performance were pivotal in securing another continental title. « It’s reason enough for him to compete for this prestigious individual honor, » the publication stated.

However, criticism has not been absent. Edu Aguirre, a journalist for El Chiringuito, labeled Messi’s nomination « a shame for football, » arguing that his MLS stint and limited impact this season don’t justify his place among the finalists.

Messi joins a star-studded list of nominees, including Erling Haaland, Rodri, Vinicius Jr., and Jude Bellingham. Yet, his presence has reignited the debate over whether sentimental achievements outweigh statistical excellence in deciding football’s top honors.
