Mali: Transitional National Council approves landmark veterans’ support law

In a unanimous decision, the Transitional National Council of Mali (CNT) has passed a groundbreaking bill establishing the National Office for Military Veterans and War Victims (ONAC).
Spearheaded by Honorable Hamèye Founé Mahalmadane, this reform underscores the government’s commitment to recognizing, integrating, and empowering former defenders of the nation.
The move signals a strategic shift in the role of retired military personnel in Malian society.
By extending benefits to former police and civil protection officers, the law reflects a broader vision of national security.
Key provisions include enhanced support, compensation for injuries, specialized housing, memorial recognition, and involvement in training current security forces.
With legal autonomy and independent funding, the ONAC is set to become a long-term pillar of military welfare.
The initiative not only addresses gaps in Mali’s 2002 veterans’ ordinance but also strengthens the bond between the state and its retired servicemen.
This aligns with the vision of Mali’s leader, General Assimi Goïta, in honoring those who have served the nation.
